lots of negative things could be said about the recent election and our future prospects. instead, i wish to focus on the positive:
- the greens held on to melbourne despite both major parties preferencing the other! the first time such a thing has ever happened. as i have always said: the greens will replace labor as the dominant center-left party in time
- queensland didn't screw the country. perhaps it's my fault for believing the talk of a wipeout up there, or perhaps i just think very little of queensland (i do), either way; the state of queensland voted fairly sane all things considered
- labor didn't lose by very much. the other times labor has lost government have all been by a much bigger margin. certainly the loss was nothing that could be considered a mandate from the people to respect ludicrous coalition policies
- the senate? we are being told that abbott might face opposition in the senate? but diminished labor and green senators can't block legislation on their own however, and will apparently need to rely on the whacky independents elected, who seem to hail from the far, far right. so im yet to be convinced the senate results really were any good. forget this point
- we now have a george w bush-esque villain moron as leader who a massive chunk of the population don't just dislike, but actually despise. it will be an interesting experiment to see if year after year of favorable coverage by australia's piece-of-shit media will bring people around to liking him. (prediction: yes)
